Hyundai Motor America announced that it will fix a steering problem affecting the 2011 MY Sonata mid-size sedan produced between Sept. 1, 2010 and April 30, 2011.

The company took action after more than 4,000 Sonata owners complained to dealers that the car tends to pull towards to the left. The South Korean automaker said it suspects that as many as 41,000 cars could be affected by this issue.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Association has also received 198 complaints about the same problem. However, Hyundai describes the action as a “service campaign” and not a recall.

A service dealer will inspect the car’s wheel alignment and tracking and, if necessary, replace the front suspension struts with a new type, free of charge, to fix the problem.

The company’s spokesman, Jim Trainor, commented that the number of complaints accounts for just 3% of the 150,000 units sold in the US from September 2010 until April 2011.

This isn’t the first time that Hyundai has to deal with steering problems on the 2011 Sonata: last September 138,000 units were recalled after customer complaints that a steering shaft could become detached from the steering wheel.
