In a surprising -but certainly welcome- turn of events, Saudi King Abdullah has overturned the sentencing of a young woman to 10 whiplashes for driving her car. The news came from Princess Ameerah Al-Taweel’s twitter account.

For those of you wondering, Princess Ameerah is a member of the Saudi royal family through her husband, HRH Prince Al-Waleed bin Talal who is King Abdullah’s nephew.

“Thank God, the lashing of Shaima is cancelled. Thanks to our beloved King. I’m sure all Saudi women will be so happy, I know I am,” the young Princess wrote on Twitter.

“Alwaleed and I spoke with Shaima, she was happy and she said: “the King’s orders washed the fears I lived with after this unjust sentence”,” she added on a new post.

Shaima Jastaina was found guilty for disobeying the country’s prohibition on women driving by Jeddah court earlier this week. The harsh sentence came only two days after the Saudi monarch has granted women the right to vote and run in municipal elections, which are scheduled for 2015.
