General Motors has lifted the veil on a pair of Chevrolet concept models for an affordable sports coupe with seating for four that were created based on feedback received from young consumers across the United States in the past year.
“Chevrolet has always stood for making the aspirational attainable for all generations” said General Motors North America President Mark Reuss. “These two concepts interpret that vision for a new generation. We’re seeking out our newest customers’ opinions, listening to their advice, and engaging them in new ways.”
The first concept model is called the Code 130R and despite the Chevy face and the Camaro-esque tail lamp design, its proportions, size and profile bear more than a passing resemblance to the BMW 1-Series Coupe.
Featured in a red metallic paint with matte anodized gold wheels, the Code 130R is leans towards the classic GT category sporting a front-mounted engine and rear-wheel drive. Power comes from a 1.4-liter Turbo Ecotec engine featuring GM’s eAssist micro-hybrid technology to reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
Chevrolet’s second study is the Tru 140S, which represents a more modern take on the small sports coupe theme. Think of the Tru 140S as GM’s Mitsubishi Eclipse both in terms of styling and mechanical layout as the three-door model combines a 1.4-liter Turbo Ecotec engine featuring eAssist with front-wheel drive.
GM says that the 1.4-liter Turbo Ecotec engine would deliver around 150HP and return 40MPG on both concept coupes, adding that if any of the two models would enter production, they would be priced “in the low $20,000s”.
“Young customers tell us they want functionality with coupe-like aesthetics. Both the Code and Tru body styles resonated with this audience,” said Frank Saucedo, director of the GM North America Advanced Design studio in Los Angeles where both models were conceived.
