Having already instigated a preliminary investigation into 360,000 Ford Taurus sedans from the 2005 and 2006 model years over a stuck throttle issue cause by cruise control cable detachment, the National Highway Traffic Safety Association (NHTSA) announced today that many more Ford group vehicles might be affected.
According to the safety agency, the probe will expand to include the 2001-2005MY Taurus and Mercury Sable as well. This increases the total number of cars to 1.92 million units.
“The agency is actively investigating a potential issue with a stuck throttle resulting from cruise control cable detachment involving certain Ford vehicles”, commented NHTSA spokeswoman Lynda Tran. “The agency is carefully evaluating all available data and will share any findings upon conclusion of its investigation,” she said.
Tran added that, during preliminary investigation, it’s not unusual to expand the search into similar models “inquiring about a broader population in order to obtain a basis for comparison”.
The agency has received 14 complaints from Taurus owners. Some claimed that, when they engaged park or neutral, the engine would rev up to 4,000 rpm, while others had trouble in stopping their cars.
