We have seen many camper conversions based on Volkswagen’s highly popular Transporter T5 vans but what makes this new offering from British firm Doubleback is the innovative extendable rear section.
All the driver needs to do is press a button and the rear end of the van almost doubles its size thanks to an electric slide out rear pod that adds close to 2 meters (~78 inches) to the length of the vehicle.
The company says that the DoubleBack sliding Pod weighs under 130kgs (287 pounds) but can hold up to 600kg (1,323 lbs) with the legs extended. The process takes about 45 seconds.
Doubleback’s Transporter is offered with two “Captains Seats” or a three-person front bench at no cost with standards features including an elevating tent top, roof bed, waterproof floor or carpeting, a kitchen pod with storage, a 50 liter fridge with ice box, a wardrobe, clean and waste water storage, removable swivel table and TV/DVD player combo.
The Transporter California Doubleback is powered by Volkswagen’s 2.0-liter turbo diesel with 138bhp (140PS), which is said to return a combined fuel economy of 36.7mpg UK (30.6mpg US or 7.7lt/km).
In the UK, the Doubleback model retails for £55,000 (US$89,300 or €67,500) or about twice the price of the regular model.
