For the second time this week, Ford has issued a recall for its brand-new 2013 Escape.

The first action affecting 8,266 Escape crossovers built from March 8, 2012 through June 7, 2012 was to fix carpet padding that could get in the way of braking.

The second recall announced today is more serious as Ford is warning owners of the 2013 Escape with the 1.6-liter EcoBoost engine, built through July 11, 2012, to stop driving the SUVs and to immediately contact their dealers as there is a potential fire hazard.

The Blue Oval said an engine compartment fuel line could split and leak fuel, potentially resulting in an underhood fire. CNN reported that so far, Ford is aware of three fires, including two at the factory and one to a customer-owned vehicle in Canada, noting however, there have been no injuries associated with this issue to date.

“We have identified an issue and are taking quick actions in the best interest of our customers,” said Ray Nevi, assistant director, Ford Automotive Safety Office. “Our intensive investigation and testing has identified the area of concern and we are moving as quickly as possible to repair vehicles for our customers. In the meantime, it is extremely important that affected customers not ignore this recall and immediately contact their dealer.”

Ford added that it is working to make parts available as quickly as possible and customers will keep the loaner vehicle at no charge until the repairs on their vehicle are completed.

According to the company’s estimates, some 11,500 Escape vehicles produced and distributed for sale in North America, with most in the U.S. market, are affected by the recall.

Ford noted that 2013 Escapes equipped with the 2.0-liter and the 2.5-liter engines are unaffected by this problem.
