Caterham’s broad line-up of Seven models is welcoming a new member in the form of the Supersport R, which sits between the less powerful 1.6-litre Supersport and the more radical Superlight R300.
The Supersport R makes do with a new adaption of the Ford-sourced 2.0-liter four-cylinder Duratec petrol engine rated for 180bhp, which is linked to a five-speed manual and a limited-slip differential that drive the rear tires.
Before you say that’s not a lot of power for a sports car, you may want to know that the Supersport R tips the scales at just 535kg or 1,179 pounds.
Caterham quotes a 0-62mph (100km/h) sprint time of 4.8 seconds and a top speed of 130mph or 209km/h for those drivers feeling extremely adventurous.
The new model comes equipped with Avon CR500 tyres, Supersport dampers and race springs. Interior features include a bespoke special steering wheel, integrated change-up light, composite race seats and four-point race harnesses.
The Seven Supersport R is priced at £24,995 (incl tax) in self-build form or £27,995 fully-built and ready to hit the track or the road.
Caterham Cars’ Chief Executive, Graham Macdonald, commented: “The Supersport’s formula has struck a chord with driving enthusiasts and we are confident that, by extending the range to include an R model, we will be able to build on the original’s success.”
