The latest automaker to join in on the recall dance is BMW, which fears that its 2009-2012 X5 xDrive 35d diesel-powered crossovers may suffer from a problem that could lead to a loss of power steering.
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHSTA), BMW said an engine belt idler pulley bolt that could loosen and break over time causes the issue at hand.
“If the engine belt idler pulley bolt breaks, the vehicle may unexpectedly lose power-assisted steering, increasing the risk of a crash,” said NHTSA.
The Detroit Free Press reported that worldwide, the BMW recall concerns some 250,000 diesel X5s, of which 29,800 are in the States and approximately 5,000 units in Canada.
BMW will solve the problem by replacing and tightening the idler pulley bolt.
In the U.S., BMW said it expects the recall to begin during January 2013.
