Honda to Build Fit Hatch, Sedan and Crossover Models at New Mexican Plant

It’s no secret that Honda plans to introduce the new generation of the Fit (sold as the Jazz in Europe) sub-compact next year and by 2015, two more variants based on the same underpinnings, including a small sedan and a crossover model, which we believe to be based on the Urban SUV Concept that was announced earlier today in advance of its Detroit Motor Show debut.

Now a report from Automotive news says that all three variants of the Fit will be built at a brand new Honda facility currently under construction in Mexico.

The Honda insider, who was not named, told the publication that the Japanese brand is considering selling all three cars in the United States as the company foresees a general shift towards smaller automobiles.

The upcoming plant, which will be Honda’s second factory in Mexico, is due to open up for business in 2014 with an annual capacity for 200,000 vehicles, of which up to 30 percent will be destined for local consumption, according to the same source.

Last year, Honda sold a little over 36,000 cars in Mexico, but in 2012, sales were up by more than 50 percent to just under 43,000 vehicles through October.
