Truth be told, 911 purists mostly considered the all-wheel drive version of Porsche’s icon to be less desirable than the rear-wheel drive model as the latter had a better steering feel.

The same lot was disheartened to learn that the new model, aka the 991, has switched from a hydraulically assisted to an electric power steering in the name of fuel economy.

Evo editor Henry Catchpole took a fully-loaded 394HP 911 Carrera 4S, complete with a sports exhaust and heated, 18-way adjustable seats (…) to Porsche’s museum in Austria.

While it was nice to see the cars on display there, he was more interested in the 20-mile twisty mountain road that lay nearby where he could discover if the all-wheel drive version is worth the premium over the standard model.

The answer, of course, depends on how much you’re willing to spend; but what Henry found out is that all-wheel drive, apart from shifting torque between axles blazingly quick, also kind of fixes one of the 991’s drawbacks.

Can you guess which one? Even if you do, the video that follows right after the break makes for a nice viewing.
