Volkswagen says the European market launch of its seventh-generation Golf is exceeding all expectations and that it is struggling to meet demand after having received more than 100,000 orders for the compact model, which is currently available in three- and five-door hatchback body styles.

As a result, the German carmaker is adding three Saturday-morning shifts at its main plant in Wolfsburg for the first quarter of the year, which will provide an additional volume of approximately 2,000 Golf Mk7s for the European market.

“Since the launch of the Mk 7, our dealers have already taken over 100,000 orders for the new Golf,” said VW CEO Martin Winterkorn. “Despite the changeover from the Mk 6 to the Mk 7 and the associated production line adjustments, we have once again shipped more than 800,000 units this year. No other European car enjoys such success.”

For the past nine years, the Golf has been the best-seller in Europe.
