A possible brake pump failure in certain 2012 i-MiEV models manufactured from December 2, 2011, through September 7, 2012, is forcing Mitsubishi to recall a worldwide total of 14,700 examples of its electric hatchback. The recall affects 1,402 vehicles in the United States.
In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the automaker stated:
“The brake system vacuum pump may fail, causing the vacuum pump to be inoperable. If the vacuum pump system fails, it will reduce available brake power, which would result in lengthened stopping distances, which may increase the risk of a vehicle crash.”
Mitsubishi added that it is not aware of any injuries and/or accidents related to this issue.
To fix the problem, the Japanese carmaker’s dealers will replace the affected vacuum pumps on the i-MiEV free of charge. NHTSA said that Mitsubishi has not yet provided a notification schedule for the recall.
