One of the surprise debuts at this week’s Geneva Motor Show is Alpina’s first ever take on an SUV with the XD3 BiTurbo, which was prompted by the success of crossovers in the market.

The renowned BMW tuning house based its model on the X3 xDrive35d, which in stock form, uses a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six diesel producing 308hp (313PS) and a peak torque of 630Nm (465 lb-ft) paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission for a 0-100km/h (62mph) sprint in 5.8 seconds and a top speed of 244km/h (152mph).

Alpina’s engineers upped these numbers to 345hp (350PS) at 4,000rpm and 700Nm ( 516 lb-ft) between 1,500 and 3,000rpm, respectively, with the XD3 BiTurbo completing the standard sprint in 4.9 seconds and topping out at 253km/h (157mph).

The Alpina model returns a combined fuel consumption of 6.8lt/100km (41.5mpg UK or 34.6 mpg US) with CO2 emissions of 180g/km, which is slightly more that the regular X3’s 6.1lt/100km (46.3mpg UK or 38.6mpg US).

The European-market only XD3 BiTurbo also gains a modified 8-speed automatic transmission, standard electronically-adjustable dampers, a front spoiler, rear apron with quad tailpipes, 20-inch wheels and a customized interior. Like all Alpina models, the XD3 BiTurbo is available only as a new car.
