Another sedan concept has been added to the list of world premieres at the 2013 Shanghai motor show in China. This time it’s the Geely KC, a conceptual proposal for a mid-size sedan measuring 4,960mm (195.2 inches) long with a 2,880mm (113 inches) wheelbase. There have been rumors that the car may be based on the present-day S80, but Geely did not confirm this.
Apparently, the car was actually revealed one day early, at a private event held in its honor. Why all the fuss? Well, reading some of the Chinese sites, one gets a sense that this car is for some reason more important to the locals than any other. In addition, since Geely owns Volvo and is one of the fastest growing of the domestic automakers, they are probably starting to feel the pressure of having to make a car up to the highest of modern standards.
The KC study was penned by former Volvo design boss, Peter Horbury, who took up the role of senior vice president of design at Geely in late 2011. While measuring almost five meters in length, the fastback styling make it look quite distinctive, and its general aesthetics preview the future styling language of the brand.
This may be premature, but if cars like this are what will sooner or later start to be imported into other parts of the world, from China, with modern design and proven mechanicals, future car buyers’ lives will be made even more complicated than they are today.
