In the latest episode of BMW‘s flashback video series, the Bavarian carmaker talks about the third generation 5-Series, known internally under its E34 codename.
The E34 5-Series was the last production BMW to feature the old-school, uncovered dual headlamps, though, it was also the first 5er to do away with the slanted shark face, with its design, both inside and out, clearly inspired by the E32 7-Series. In fact, at the time, many described the car as a junior 7-Series. In another first for the series, the E34 was available in two body styles, sedan and station wagon (Touring).
Introduced in 1988, it remained in production until 1996 (Touring) having more than 1.3 million sales under its belt. The highlight of the range was the M5 offered with BMW’s classic straight six with 315PS (311hp) and then with 340PS (335hp).
In the following video, you can see the car and hear what the E34’s chief exterior designer Ralf Langmeier has to say about it.
