Tesla’s Superchargers are an excellent way to try to dispel prospective buyers’ fears regarding the range and charging opportunities, and they offer free fast charging to all Model S owners. Currently limited to eight such stations in California and New York, the network is set to grow exponentially within the next two years, according to a video announcement by Elon Musk.

The number of superchargers will be increased to 25 by the end of June, and within one year, Musk says that the “major metropolitan areas” of the US will have been covered. The plan is to expand it further, and it is predicted that in two years’ time, “98 percent” of the population will have easy access to one – Europe may be next…

Furthermore, he added that these new stations’ charging times will go down to 20 to 22 minutes, which is about half of what Tesla owners have to wait with the current stations – rate of charge is up from 90 kW to 120 kW.

In the announcement. Musk said that access will be kept free for owners of their cars, for life, so perhaps within two years, a coast-to-coast drive trip in a Model S will become possible and will cost drivers nothing in fuel.
