Since Top Gear has taken a long break from our television sets to shoot new episodes (no more than six per season), Jeremy Clarkson is perhaps feeling a bit neglected and has therefor chosen to make a statement to get everybody talking about him. This time he used his Twitter account to ask, “When will British Airways realize that babies belong in the hold?”
His anger was caused by a recent flight he took to Scotland, which probably didn’t go so well because of child troubles. It was not explained what caused Clarkson to make the remark, but predictably, it sparked outrage in various circles.
For instance, parenting site Mumsnet responded by saying “There are plenty of Mumsnet users hoping British Airways will realise Jeremy Clarkson belongs in the hold,” which may sound like a justified eye for eye response, but it actually adds fuel to the fire, instead of trying to calm things down.
After The Daily Mail picked up the story, Clarkson posted again, this time trying to explain his tweet by adding that his kids “did not fly until they were old enough to behave.”
As usual, some see the Top Gear presenter’s outspoken ways as amusing and entertaining, while others take it far too seriously. Does his image suffer because of it? No, and he actually has a lot to gain – the idea is to try and be a little bit like the Jeremy Clarkson character he plays on the show, in real life, purely for promotional reasons, I say.
After all, who could seriously suggest putting babies in the cargo hold? It was a somewhat sick joke thought up for a few laughs and to get the media talking – many people wrongly taking it in a literal sense.
