We’ve always wondered why Mercedes-Benz did not make an E63 AMG version of their E-Class Coupe and E-Class Cabriolet, which would have made a lot of sense, since they already have hot versions of pretty much any car in their lineup. Now, we learn that Mercedes itself regrets not having done so, but the Germans say this will amended in the next-generation car.
PistonHeads says it got in touch with the German automaker’s product manager, Gerd Jungingerm who explained that the decision was taken back when the current model E-Class was still in the planning phase, and “at that time, AMG had a different strategy.” He does explain, however, that they’ve come to realize that “It’s the perfect car to be an AMG.”
The most powerful version of the current two-door E-Class is the E550, which gets a twin-turbocharged V8 with 402-horses, but it’s still down on power compared to its AMG-badged predecessor, the old CLK which was built until 2009 – it even had a Black Series variant with 507 hp.
But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. The new E-Class is still a few years away, and the facelifted version of the current model is still very fresh – they may change their minds again until then.
