See the two special individuals pictured in the mug shots above? We can’t say for sure why one of them is laughing, but it could be because he just figured out what he just tried to do hours before these pictures were taken in Tempe, Arizona.

Paul Gardener (pictured on the left) and Chad Leakey (right) were apprehended on Saturday after the two geniuses attempted to break into an unmarked police car, in which at the time, there were two officers…sitting inside!

According to an AZFamily report, Police spokesman Sgt. Mike Pooley said that Gardener opened the rear passenger door of the unmarked car and tried to get in but quickly backed out after seeing the metal cage and, of course, the two cops looking at him from the front.

The two men then went to make a run for it but the two cops caught up with them and placed them in the squad car, this time, in handcuffs.

Not surprisingly, the officers found a small baggie of methamphetamine in Gardener’s pockets, while they also discovered stolen mail in Leakey’s backpack. The Tempe Police Department said they have linked the two perpetrators to one more vehicle burglary, and two other attempted vehicle burglaries in the same area.
