We’ve seen what a powerful electric vehicle can do, both on the road and on the track. A battery-powered model carries more weight than a conventional petrol- or diesel-powered alternative, but it has a simplified drivetrain and instant torque, so it does have its advantages.

While Renault Sport is interested in adding an EV to their sporty lineup, it doesn’t seem ready yet, according to a report from CarAdvice, which spoke to the brand’s motorsport technical manager, Francois Champod.

Champod said that RenaultSport had not yet put its hands on a Zoe EV, and the technology behind the car is deemed “fantastic” but “not mature enough”. However, from what we gather, a hybrid RS model that does away with the turbocharger and substitutes it with electric power, is a more plausible way for electrification to make its way into one of their cars – Champod admits that it is one of the things they “are looking at.”

When it comes to EV racing, Renault says that nothing in that direction will be done until series like Formula E take off and prove successful.
