Diesel is growing in popularity among passenger cars in the US, Canada, and along with it, the danger of misfueling – putting gasoline into the tank which should contain diesel only.
Volkswagen of America is reportedly supporting the cost of having to fit a misfueling protection system to some quarter of a million Jetta and Golf TDIs, manufactured between 2009 – 2012 and 2010 – 2012 respectively.
The information comes from a report put together by Autoweek, which sheds further light on the matter. They explain that VW may have been prompted to take such drastic action, as it has been faced with complaints regarding high-pressure fuel pump failures, which they attribute to misfueling – the problem is currently being investigated by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
Apparently, some drivers complained about their cars stalling, especially on the freeway, and upon inspection, around 90 percent of all cars tested had “substantial amounts of gasoline in their tanks,” and failing or failed fuel pumps.
So far, 160 complaints have been filed, and this is not yet a recall, but it could very easily turn into one, depending on the findings of the NHTSA’s investigation, which “has been upgraded to an engineering analysis,” according to the same source.
