With a very short and simple press statement, Ferrari announced on Wednesday that it will provide Marussia, an Anglo-Russian Formula One racing team based in Banbury in the United Kingdom, with engines and gearboxes for the 2014 season when the rules change and 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 power units will be introduced.
“Scuderia Ferrari is pleased to announce that Marussia F1 Team is now part of the group of its Formula 1 customer teams,” said Ferrari. “The long term technical collaboration is for the supply of the entire powertrain as prescribed in the 2014 regulations.”
Marussia parted ways with Cosworth, which had been the team’s engine supplier since 2010 after the later decided to stop being a F1 engine supplier following the change of rules with the V6 units.
“The importance of this development to our Team cannot be overstated,” said Marussia F1 Team Ceo Andy Webb. “Not only will we benefit from a customer supply from the most successful engine manufacturer in Formula One’s history, but this also provides further confirmation, if it were needed, of our commitment to the sport and determination to maintain our progression towards our long-term ambitions.”
“The new powertrain regulations being introduced next year represent the most substantial engine development within the sport since the introduction of the V8 formula and are all the more significant for the increased contribution of the Energy Recovery System,” Webb added.
