The current Jaguar lineup is well represented in the upper luxury segments, but it lacks some models that would help it increase sales, more specifically a BMW 3-Series rival and an SUV.
While Jaguar’s compact sedan, rumored to be called the XS, is under development, it looks like the UK carmaker is not wasting time with the SUV either. According to a report from Auto Express, Jaguar’s SUV is currently in its advanced design stages, with sales to begin by 2015.
Citing inside information, the magazine says the SUV will feature a sleek design that will combine the lines of a Jaguar saloon with those of a high-riding SUV. Expect steeply raked front and rear screens, short overhangs and a blacked-out C-pillar – a homage to the range-topping XJ saloon. Unlike the XJ and XF, though, the headlights will have a vertical position, inspired by those of the F-Type roadster.
Projected to be called Q-Type of XQ (both names are trademarked by Jaguar), the SUV will be a rival for the BMW X3 and Audi Q5, using the same platform with Jaguar’s upcoming BMW 3-Series rival. Both models are said to use a shortened version of the XJ’s all-aluminum platform, a move that will help keep weight down and development costs low.
Both cars will be offered with either rear- or all-wheel drive and will feature a fuel-saving electric power-steering system, first seen on the C-X75 supercar. The report says the engine lineup for the SUV will consist mainly of four-cylinder engines, including the 240bhp 2.0-liter Si4 turbo and the 2.2-liter SD4 diesel from the Range Rover Evoque, offered exclusively with the latest 8-speed ZF automatic gearbox.
Top-of-the-range SUV models might also get a 340bhp version of Jaguar’s 3.0-liter supercharged V6 engine, as well as a petrol-electric hybrid using technology from the C-X75.
