Pope Francis – formerly Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio, has been in the spotlight since he was elected as supreme head of the Catholic Church. Most of the time, he received media coverage for preaching humility and criticizing some of the members of the church for their inclination towards worldly matters.
Pope Francis’ latest advice comes from the same page, with the Roman Pontiff now offering his view on cars. He said it pained him to see priests driving flashy cars, and told them to choose something more “humble”.
“It hurts me when I see a priest or a nun with the latest car model, you can’t do this,” the Pope was quoted as saying by Italian news agency ANSA. “A car is necessary to do a lot of work, but please, choose a more humble one. If you like the fancy one, just think about how many children are dying of hunger in the world,” he added.
Pope Francis, who wants to make the Catholic Church more austere and to focus on the poor, told young and trainee priests and nuns from around the world that owning the latest smartphone or fashion accessory was not the route to happiness.
And since he is the Pope, he has to set an example, which is why he drives a modest metallic blue Ford Focus for moving around Vatican City. However, for visits abroad, he will take delivery of a Mercedes-Benz M-Class Popemobile, which he will use in July for his first official visit to Brazil.
So what cars do you think are humble enough for priests and nuns to drive? I for one can’t help but remember the scene from the Louis de Funès movie where a nun drove the wheels off a very humble Citroen 2CV, scaring the living hell out of the gendarme played by the legendary French comedian. So what would be the modern equivalent of the 2CV? Show us pictures in the comments below.
