Born at a time when American cars were getting bigger and bigger, oblivious to the looming Arab Oil Embargo that would forever change the face of the U.S. car market (with a little help from the Japanese auto industry), the second generation Chevrolet Caprice introduced in 1971 was a giant in its own right riding on a huge 121.5-inch (3,090 mm) wheelbase and offered with V8 engines ranging in displacement from 5.7- to 7.4-liters.
When the oil crisis struck in late 1973, it was too late and Detroit’s Big Three could only do so much to realign their existing lineup to the needs of the time. The Caprice Mk2 battled on until 1977 with two facelifts, one of which introduced a more fuel-efficient but less powerful, 5.7-liter V8 with 145hp.
One of the survivors from those times has surfaced on eBay; a 1976 Chevrolet Caprice Coupe, which wouldn’t have caught our attention if it weren’t for its meticulous condition and low mileage (only 4,727 miles or 7,605 km).
The seller states: “This car is unrestored and as nice as any anywhere, the tires on this car are the originals we would be truly honered to put and brand new set on it we left them on to show you how original it was beautiful as you can see in pics below. Everything works. Never been smoked in. Has original ash trays and cigarette lighters (never been used). Interior is very clean, Tires and wheels are in great shape. Car runs and drives perfectly.”
Just before we finished writing this post, the car was sold for $8,933.33 after a battle between several bidders.
