Trying to challenge the BMW 5-Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Audi A6 and even the Lexus GS is a hard task nowadays, as all of them are extremely talented, and you’d be hard-pressed to find any real faults with any of them.

However, Jaguar is still trying to convince us with its now moderately-popular XF, a car which has slowly been getting better over the years, along with its styling – I frankly didn’t like the shapes of the headlights for the first-gen model.

Now, one facelift and multiple updates later, it’s still not top of the class, aside from its looks which (subjectively) make it one of the prettier faces we get to see. Then there are also the revolving air vents inside, and unique rotary gear selector, as well as the decent material quality, plus the great handling and excellent comfort levels. There is a lot to like, just don’t try to left-brain everything, every single time. This is the conclusion drawn by Consumer Reports, after having done the quick video take you can see below.

They argue that it is not necessarily the most rational choice in the class, but it has plenty of upsides to make it recommendable. I, for one, would consider it over others in the class, even as a kind of efficient company car, for doing lots of miles in, with motivation being provided either by the relatively new 2.2-liter diesel, or the larger 3.0-liter V6 unit – sadly they’re not available in the US.
