Ferrari is one of the most image-conscious automakers out there – there really are few others, if any, that would actually cut production to preserve the value and exclusivity of their cars. For this reason, it is harder for the Italians to simply give up using big V12s and try something else, than it is for Jaguar or any other slightly less exclusive brand.
They say they’re selling a dream, not a car, and for that reason, they would like to continue using hybrids in the future, being preferred because they preserve the sensations and experience buyers expect out of a Ferrari, whereas a hushed all-electric powertrain wouldn’t.
Besides, they should do as little to the car-making formula as possible, and perhaps concentrate a little less on making branded mugs and t-shirts, and pedal cars and sunglasses… It is making them a lot of extra non-automotive money, but if anything else, the idea that they’re so bent on doing it too, on the side, detracts from the brand image more than making a larger number of cars would…
So, expect future Ferraris to start offering some sort of electrification too, and if the only byproduct of that is more performance, even at the expense of a bit of extra weight, which is ultimately negated (like their LaFerrari), we admit to being intrigued as to what the future holds for Ferrari and their principles.
