The 542hp Jaguar XFR-S is without a doubt, the most extreme Jaguar sedan ever made. Powered by the same 5.0-liter supercharged engine from the equally bonkers XKR-S, the sports sedan is capable of supercar-rivaling performance, with 0-100 km/h (62 mph) rated at 4.4 seconds and a top speed of 299 km/h( 186 mph).

But how does the British newcomer stack up against a well-established German super sedan like the Mercedes E 63 AMG? Autocar’s Steve Sutcliffe put both cars to the test and reached some unsurprising conclusions.

First of all, the Jag came under criticism for two things: its ride is too stiff for the road and the engine too silent for a car that sports a massive rear wing on the boot. Other than that, it is too heavy (a little under 2 tons), too expensive (almost £80,000 pounds) and its brakes are subject to fading.

Of course, Sutcliffe also had nice things to say about the XFR-S: it handles beautifully on track, it is extremely fast, it has a crisp steering and a very good 8-speed automatic gearbox.

However, its biggest problem is the 542hp Mercedes E 63 AMG. The Merc does absolutely everything better than the Jag: it’s 142kg lighter, £6,250 cheaper, it has a better chassis, crisper steering and the V8 engine produces more noise and more torque (39 Nm/29 lb-ft). Maybe next time…
