Audi has yanked the roof off its open top version of the latest generation A3 series, a couple of days prior to its exhibition premiere in front of an international audience at the Frankfurt Motor Show in Germany.
Key aspects of the second generation A3 Cabriolet is that, unlike its hatchback predecessor, the new model is built on the longer chassis of the sedan model, which affords it a more streamlined look (the longer rear overhang helps its proportions) together with a larger capacity boot, while this time, it will reportedly be available in North America as well.
Overall, it’s bigger, more spacious yet at the same time, around 50 kg (110.23 lb) lighter than the previous model, mainly due to the VW Group’s MQB platform and the broader use of lightweight materials such as the aluminum bonnet.
In numbers, the new A3 Cabriolet’s length increased from 4.24 to 4.42 meters (13.91 to 14.50 ft), its wheelbase from 2.58 to 2.60 meters (8.46 to 8.53 ft) and its width from 1.77 to 1.79 meters (5.81 to 5.87 ft). It’s height, however, at 1.41 meters (4.63 ft), was reduced by 15 millimeters (0.59 in). Boot capacity is up by a significant 60 liters (2.12 cubic ft) to 287 liters (10.14 cubic ft), with Audi stating that it’s also easier to load.
Covering the passenger area is a soft cloth top stretched over a lightweight kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel, which opens or closes at the touch of a button in under 18 seconds and at vehicle speeds of up to 50km/h (31mph).
In Europe, there will be a variety of engines to choose, including two petrol units, a 138hp (140PS) 1.4-liter TSI and a 178hp (180PS) 1.8-liter TSI, plus a 148hp (150PS) 2.0-liter turbo diesel. Later on, Audi will enhance the range with a 108hp (110PS) 1.6-liter turbo diesel and the top-of-the line S3 performance model powered by a 2.0-liter TSI rated for 296hp (300PS).
The S3 with a six-speed S tronic can complete the sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62mph) in 5.4 seconds, and return a combined fuel consumption of 7.1l/100km (33.13 US mpg).
Transmission options, depending on the engine, will include a six-speed manual and a seven speed dual-clutch S tronic, while Audi said quattro all-wheel drive models will be offered after launch.
On the technology front, you’ll find available LED headlamps, the Audi drive select vehicle dynamics system that allows the driver to modify engine management, power steering, S tronic and air conditioning operation over several modes, the Audi Magnetic Ride adaptive suspension control system, a Bang & Olufsen sound system and MMI Navigation plus.
Further details including availability will be released during the show.
