With the Concept S-Class Coupé, Mercedes gives us an idea of what the next generation CL luxury coupe will look like. Actually, if the concept bits are removed, it’s safe to say we’re looking at the all-new CL (which may or may not keep that name), since the study looks nearly production-ready.
The design of the Concept S-Class Coupé shows it’s related to the new S-Class sedan: the shape of the headlights, the side creases and the dashboard layout all remind of Mercedes’ flagship sedan. The size shows it too: at 5,050mm (198.9in) in length, 1,958mm (77in) in width and 1,409mm (55in) in height, the study has a powerful presence, reinforced by the 21-inch wheels.
The profile of the coupe is sleeker and more elegant than the sedan’s, thanks to the lower height, dome-shaped stretched roof line, smaller glasshouse and long bonnet. Naturally, the Concept S-Class Coupé adopts Mercedes’ sporty grille instead of the classic one with the star on the bonnet. The rear is dominated by the thin horizontal taillights united by a chrome trim strip.
On the inside, the dashboard has a similar layout to the one in the S-Class and features the 12.3-inch screens from the sedan. There’s also a touch screen showing four world clocks located on the center console. Overall, the entire cabin being dominated by flowing lines, with materials including aluminum, calfskin and hand-woven silk.
The Frankfurt show study is powered by a 4.6-liter V8 Biturbo engine developing 449hp (455PS) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Naturally, the S-Class Coupé is full of advanced technology, with “Intelligent Drive” featuring two “camera eyes” that can get a three-dimensional view of the area up to about 50 meters in front of the vehicle, and as “6DVision” can detect the position and movement of objects. The system monitors the surroundings ahead of the vehicle over a range of up to 500 meters (0.31mi), with data being combined with data from the radar and ultrasound sensors.
Even the suspension profits from the new stereo camera, as the study can detect surface undulations in advance. If that’s the case, the Magic Body Control system adjusts the suspension to suid the situation.
Finally, the infotainment system of the Concept S-Class Coupé features the MoodGrid software from music recognition service Gracenote makes it possible to listen to whatever music fits the mood. Based on a selected mood, the software compiles a pre-selection of songs from a catalog of 18 million tracks.
