After the demise of the CLK nameplate, which in essence, was a C-Class dressed to look like it belonged to the larger E-Class family, Mercedes split its two-door offerings in two, with the C-Class getting a coupe model in 2011, and the E-Class gaining both a coupe and a convertible.
With the next generation of the C-Class, Mercedes will broaden its two-door lineup with the addition of a convertible model, a prototype of which was spied undergoing testing in Germany.
Set to arrive along with the coupe version in 2015 or about a year after the next C-Class sedan lands onto the market, the four-seater convertible will compete against the upcoming BMW 4-Series Cabrio and the Audi A5 Cabriolet.
The tester seen in these scoop photos is wearing a hardtop, but we hear that the production car will be fitted with a power-operated, multilayer fabric structure like the one utilized on the current E-Class Convertible.
A typically Mercedes range of gasoline engines will power the new C-Class Convertible, with European buyers to also have the option of diesel units.
