If your really-really liked the movie “Rush,” the one that told the slightly dramatized story of the 1976 Formula One season, then perhaps you’d be interested in acquiring a bit of relevant paraphernalia to decorate your presumably already stacked garage with.
It’s the helmet worn by driver James Hunt in1976, the year when he won his first and only world title, driving for McLaren and battling it out with Niki Lauda and his Ferrari right up until the last race.
Made by Bell, the helmet was of a new design for its day, with a narrower aperture than everybody else; this made Hunt quite easy to recognize by fans and photographers alike.
The helmet goes to auction at Bonhams on December 9 and it’s expected to sell for up to £20,000 or $32,000. It had previously been owned by the McLaren team manager of the day, who had it from 1977 up until 1997, when it seems to have started changing hands more freely, now ending up under the hammer.
