Volkswagen is revisiting an idea from January 2000, when it presented the New Beetle Dune concept in Los Angeles, with a similarly themed concept car at next week’s 2014 Detroit motor Show, but you won’t have to wait until tomorrow to see it as more than a dozen photos surfaced online today.

The new Beetle Dune Concept for a taller-riding and tougher looking version of the retro-inspired compact is very close to production, something that the company itself admits.

In the press release VW stated that while the 2000 concept “was far from a production possibility, the Beetle Dune is very much based on the current production model, using the same 210PS [207hp] turbocharged petrol engine and six-speed DSG gearbox, providing power to the front wheels.”

We’ll have more on the Beetle Dune on Monday.
