No single country has ever reported sales of 20 million cars in twelve months, until China did, that is, having announced the feat for the year that just passed. Not even the rebounded US market, with its total of 15.6 million vehicle sales could run it close.

For China, this marked a 12 percent overall increase over 2012, and it seems that the only way for them is up in 2014 too.

Apparently, the largest growth of all was recorded by sedans, of which 47 percent more were sold in 2013 than the year before – that’s 7.3 million big boots ready to be filled with lots of stuff.

According to IIHS data quoted in a CBS report, The country’s top-selling car was the Ford Focus with 403,000 units shifted (36.2 percent up from 2012), followed by the (revised) VW Lavida and Buick Excelle. As for brands, VW was the PRC’s bestselling carmaker (2.4 million sold, up 16.9 percent), followed by Hyundai, Toyota, Nissan and GM, in order.

For added context, do check out the video posted below – it’s from the start of 2013 and it announced the prospect.
