The next logical step for the newly launched 2015 Mini hatchback is the addition of a range-topping performance model with the John Cooper Works (JCW) badge. In essence, Mini previewed the production car with the JCW Concept at last month’s Detroit auto show, but behinds the scenes, it’s still working on the car as evidenced by theses spy shots.

The prototype is built around the Cooper S model and sports a different front bumper with bigger air intakes as well as bigger brakes with red calipers all around, but doesn’t get the full aero and styling treatment, missing out on elements like the concept’s rear diffuser and wheels, which will be present on the production car.

In Detroit, Mini avoided any talk around the powertrain, but it is believed that the JCW will incorporate a tuned version of the Coooper S’ 189hp (192PS) 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder gasoline unit producing somewhere around 230-horsepower.
