What we have here are the first spy shots of the fifth generation of Renault’s pioneering series of Espace minivans. If you haven’t been following the auto show circuit, the French firm previewed the looks of its flagship people carrier with the impressive Initiale Paris Concept at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

And yes, its appearance underwent the usual toning-down process from the study, but not to the point of not being instantly recognizable as a direct descendant of the Initiale Paris.

Due to the heavy camouflage, we cannot see if the production car kept the concept’s crossover-flavored exterior accents, but it does look to ride on a taller suspension, and also keeps the steeply raked front windshield design. What it doesn’t get is the Initiale Paris’ sliding rear doors, as Renault opted for traditional set of doors.

The new Espace should have a similar footprint to the current model sans the lower roof that affords it a more dynamic appearance, and will retain its seven-seat layout.

Renault has been hush about the powertrain choices on the next Espace, but it will likely be offered with a new lineup of turbocharged diesel and possibly petrol engines as well.
