The Chevrolet Camaro is looking particularly sharp these days, after its most recent restyling, so the news that its successor may adopt an evolutionary design is not by any means bad news.

The next Camaro will make its showroom debut in an unknown quarter of 2015, and it will reportedly ride on a platform derived from that used to underpin the Cadillac ATS and CTS sedans.

Edmunds says it expects the new model to be first revealed at the 2015 Detroit Auto show, mere months after its horse-badged rival from Ford goes on sale this fall.

“The difference between the existing and redesigned (Camaro) is not drastically different,” an unnamed industry source who has purportedly seen the new car told Edmunds. “It looks like a worked-over current-model Camaro. It is on a different platform, so that is a significant difference, but when they modified it to be on a different platform, the styling did not change that much.”

When asked about the 2016 Camaro, Chevrolet spokesman Mike Albano said: “We won’t discuss future product, but I will tell you that any Camaro we do will have expressive design and will evoke the passion the previous-generation Camaros have done. Camaro always has kind of moved the heart and the next generation will do the same thing when you see it on the road.”

With over 80,000 examples sold in 2013, the Camaro just nudged ahead of the Mustang in terms of sales, but the Ford could have the upper hand in 2014, as it will have the market sector pretty much to itself, and it will definitely stand out in a crowd of cars first released around the year 2008-2009.

The Camaro will also make it to Europe to challenge the ‘Stang there too – will GM give it an Opel Astra OPC-derived 2.0-liter petrol engine to match the (future) Ford Focus RS-derived 2.3-liter in the Ford?
