The next-iteration of the Porsche Boxster and Cayman sports car will receive a four-cylinder boxer engine, Porsche CEO Matthias Müller disclosed. In an interview with Germany’s Auto Motor und Sport magazine published on March 20, the executive said future Porsche road cars will receive four-cylinder engines, just like the company’s 919 Hybrid endurance racer.
The first Porsche road cars to get a four-cylinder engine will be the Boxster and Cayman, but unlike the 919 Hybrid that uses a 2.0-liter V4 petrol powerplant, the engine for the two sports cars will have a 180-degree horizontally opposed layout as part of a modular engine strategy.
“We will continue with the downsizing strategy and develop a new four-cylinder boxer engine, which will see service in the next-generation Boxster and Cayman. We will not separate ourselves from efforts to reduce CO2,” Müller said in the interview, according to Autoweek.
The executive said the new four-cylinder engine will produce up to 400PS (396 hp), making it significantly more powerful than today’s 3.4-liter six-cylinder boxer unit which develops up to 326 hp (330PS) and 335 hp (340PS) respectively in the new Boxster and Cayman GTS models.
Müller didn’t offer a timeframe for the introduction of the new engine, but according to a previous report, Porsche could fit the new four-cylinder unit to the Macan as well.
