With Ford’s all-new aluminum-bodied F150 still not reached the market yet, Consumer Reports has done a tally of the scores for its choices in the pickup sector. The result is the video you see below, a quick recap of what makes each of the most popular trucks on the market sell, and what prevents it from being great – each of the models shown has some kind of weakness.
For the Toyota Tacoma, it’s the unrefined character that may deter some buyers, while the Honda Ridgeline’s more compact dimensions don’t necessarily translate into good fuel economy numbers; Ford’s current F-150 is considered an “also-ran.”
The Ram 1500’s coil suspension makes it the most compliant-riding of the bunch, and it probably has one of the best engine choices out there: a Euro-designed three-liter V6 diesel that should really be the only engine it is ever going to need. Despite the apparent small displacement, it has 420 lb-ft (570 Nm) of twist, and the two-wheel drive variant is rated at 28 mpg on the highway (that’s 8.4 l/100km).
