Surprisingly, our scoop photographers stumbled upon a completely undisguised prototype of what appears to be a Volkswagen Golf Estate R rolling behind the Nürburgring track.
There’s no mistaking the front end with the muscled-up bumper, the large alloy wheels behind which we see the big brake discs for anything else other than an R, and the only elements missing to complete the package as seen on the Golf R hatch, are the side skirts, darker tail lamps and quad pipe arrangement at the back.
If this is indeed an R, and all evidence points to it being one, then it should share the hatchback’s 4-cylinder 2.0-liter turbo with 296bhp (300PS) delivered from 5,500 to 6,200 rpm and 380Nm (280 lbs ft) of peak torque from 1,800 to 5,500 rpm, hooked up to either a 6sp manual or a dual-clutch transmission and VW’s 4Motion all-wheel drive.
Seeing it Golf Estate trim, we can’t but wonder if VW would consider bringing the car as the Jetta SportWagen to North America. Thoughts?
