Heavy cars that are kept pointing in the right way around corners by electronic aids make a certain sound when they are pushed hard, kind of like the one you’ll hear in the video posted below.

It features both the S500 and S63 AMG versions of Mercedes’ latest two-door flagship being punished around the Nurburgring Nordschleife, with loud the racket of computer-quelled understeer being very noticeable.

It could be that both cars are equipped with 4 Matic all-wheel drive, and maybe that causes the sound and two-wheel drive models look more agile.

Moreover, one only gets to hear the sweet V8 noise very late after each corner – it’s either that the drivers aren’t particularly brave at putting the power down fast, or the car is simply not designed to be driven like that.

It may sound like an odd thing to say, but the S Coupe is not really a car destined for people who enjoy track driving, as sporty and aggressive as it may look, and it may very well enforce James May’s theory that honing a car around the ‘Ring can be viewed negatively too.
