As the main supporter of the Detroit Electric car company idea, Albert Lam conceded to the fact that his goals sit at the border “between sanity and insanity,” in regards to getting the SP:01 model off an assembly line. The Lotus Elise-based model was supposed to have already gone into production in Detroit last year, but setback after setback have so far prevented this.

Now, TheDetroitBureau has information that the newly-created company bearing a century-old name, with no relation to the latter whatsoever, will in fact start building the SP:01 later in 2014.

The prospect of the car being built in a bespoke Detroit factory seems very unlikely as it would require a massive injection of capital that simply can’t be justified. A workaround would be the previously mentioned idea of building the cars in Holland, though the source piece doesn’t go into the specifics in regards to that.

The final (known) piece of the Detroit Electric puzzle would be the next car they’re planning to do, which is a more mainstream EV sedan that will be easier to sell. However, they’ve probably yet to begin even sketching it at the rate things are going for them, with uncertainty looming.
