There’s something about heated up station wagons that gets many motoring enthusiasts (myself included) all charged up. Perhaps it’s the allure of having a car that satisfies many needs and wants, including the one for speed, while also defying mainstream car culture – at least in the U.S. were estates are officially an endangered species.

German automakers are the ones leading the race here with only a few notable exceptions like GM’s Cadillac CTS-V and Holden Commodore SS-V wagons, and just recently, Jaguar’s XFR-S Sportbrake.

And there’s more to come from the land of bratwurst and beer, as Volkswagen has been caught conducting tests of a Golf R Estate in and out of the Nürburgring. Our spies secured a second set of photos of the performance estate that boasts a boot capacity of 605 liters (21.4 cu.ft.) with the rear seats up, and 1620 liters (57.2 cu.ft.) with the seats down. And if that’s not enough, the crew from TouriClips nabbed the same prototype on film for our enjoyment.

A production version would share its four-wheel drive underpinnings and 296bhp (300PS) 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four with the Golf R hatch that can run to 100km/h (62mph) from standstill in 4.9 seconds with a DSG transmission and 5.1 seconds with a 6sp stick shift.
