No doubt, Peugeot Design Lab’s new Onyx sofa made from handcrafted Volvic volcanic lava stone merged with hi-tech carbon fiber is an intriguing piece of display-style furniture that the French say was inspired and named after the Onyx Supercar and Supertrike concepts from the 2012 Paris Auto Show.

Revealed at the Milan Design Week that runs from April 8 to 13 in Italy, the sofa incorporates Peugeot’s recurring theme of seamlessly blending two very different materials into a product and which can also be seen in the brand’s upcoming Exalt four-door coupe study.

According to the French firm, it took 70 days to make the unique Onyx Sofa that is offered for sale at a price that will likely give most of you the same gaping mouth expression as the previous generation Peugeots: €135,000 or US$186,200 / £111,200.

Accompanying the Onyx Sofa at Peugeot Design Lab’s booth in Milan, are seven sculptures, including lamps, shelves, armchairs and tables, all of which explore coalitions of materials such as obsidian with concrete and red ferrous jasper with steel.

“Customers of PEUGEOT DESIGN LAB furniture will be free to choose their object and their materials,” says the company. “Each piece will then be a unique creation, guided by the essence of the raw material”.
