If you recall, the first two generations of Opel’s Agila were rebadged Suzuki models built at the Japanese automaker’s Magyar plant in Hungary. Now, with third iteration of the city car, parent company GM is taking a different road using the next iteration of the Chevrolet Spark as the base to build the five-door model.
It’s difficult to say with certainty due to the heavy camouflage, but previous spy pictures of the 2016 Chevrolet Spark that may or may not make its world premiere at the New York Auto Show next week, suggest that the two models may share a similar, if not identical silhouette. That won’t be a problem for GM as Chevrolet will pull out of Europe by 2016.
The Agila, which will be marketed under the Vauxhall brand in Britain, will be Opel’s most affordable model targeting the latest crop of city cars like the VW Up!, Renault Twingo and Toyota Aygo. The Adam will continue to be a more premium proposition in the segment.
Under the bonnet, the Agila could get a naturally-aspirated version of Opel’s new 3-cylinder 1.0-liter engine, as well as the turbocharged variants introduced in the Adam with 90PS/89hp and 115PS/113hp, while an all-electric model could join the range later on.
