Not only are we seeing more prototypes of the next Audi R8 on the road lately, but surprisingly, they are also shedding the oh-so irritating black and white camouflage. In fact, in just a few weeks’ time, we went from a full body wrap to the very thinly disguised tester you see here.
The body is largely naked with only the front-end sporting non-production parts like the headlamps and bumper, while the rest of the car, simply features black masking tape here and there.
So what do these fresh pictures tell us about the second iteration of the popular R8 aside from the fact that most people will likely have to take out their magnifying goggles to tell the two models apart? Simply put, the Mk2 will have more chiseled and edgier lines than the current model, and possibly, a more dramatic face placed lower to the ground.
Judging by the formula used on the TT, the new R8 should have a better design story to tell from the inside where it will most certainly use a similar interface with a large monitor in the driver’s instrument binnacle incorporating the infotainment display.
Beneath the familiar body rests the VW Group’s ‘MSS’ supercar architecture found on the Lamborghini Huracan, but with wider tracks and an elongated wheelbase. The current R8’s naturally-aspirated V8 and V10 mills will soldier on with improvements, but don’t rule out a turbocharged unit later finding its way in the near future.
