It’s not the best look, no thanks to the full body armor and phony front and rear ends, but it’s the first one we have of the next generation Opel (Vauxhall in Britain) Astra, the current version of which has been with us since 2009.
These photos suggest that Opel won’t stray too far away from the familiar Astra formula for the five-door edition, though, the final product should incorporate elements from the styling language presented on the recent Monza Concept such as the more flamboyant grille, sharper creases on the body and a rounder rear end.
Under the sheet-metal, the Astra J’s replacement will utilize the latest version of GM’s compact car platform and benefit from a new line of fuel-efficient Ecotec engines ranging in displacement from 1.0- to 1.5-liters with up to 165-horses that Opel plans to roll out by 2017. These will join a series of turbocharged 1.6-liter mills, and in the case of the OPC/VXR replacement, a high-performance 2.0-liter unit.
Expect the usual advancements in the tech and safety feature departments, while Opel officials have mentioned higher quality interiors for all upcoming models.
Aside from the five-door hatch, Opel will release a sporty-looking three-door model, an estate and a four-door sedan for select markets.
It’s a bit early for a final introduction date, but the new Astra should make its appearance within the next 18 months.
