The European New Car Assessment Programme (Euro NCAP) has released the latest set of crash test results that include the all-new Mercedes-Benz C-Class and the Hyundai i10.
As expected, Mercedes’ new sedan got the maximum overall rating of five stars, scoring 92 percent for adult occupant protection, 84 percent for child occupant, 77 percent for pedestrian and 70 percent for safety assist.
The organization noted that “dummy readings indicated good protection of the knees and femurs of the driver and passenger dummies”, but said that the C-Class’ rear head restraints offered a marginal level of protection against whiplash injury in a rear impact.
The Hyundai i10 didn’t fare as well as the C-Class, with the South Korean city car getting a 79 percent score for adult occupant protection, 80 percent for child occupant, 71 percent for pedestrian and 56 percent for safety assist. Overall, the i10 received four stars.
Euro NCAP said that, “inspection of the car after the crash revealed that the rear door on the struck side was not fully latched.” After analyzing footage of the crash test, the organization concluded that the handle “lifted in the crash, owing to inertia, and that this may have partially unlatched the door.”
Other problems included the marginal protection of the chest in the side pole impact and of the rear head restraints in case of a rear impact.
