Ayrton Senna has given Formula One so many stories and memorable events that it’s hard to select just one that best represents the brilliant driver he was. To commemorate 20 years since Senna passed away, McLaren has released a tribute video titled “Remember Senna” which recalls what was probably the Brazilian’s greatest ever lap – the pole position lap for the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix.
The video is a recreation of Senna walking to his car and setting one of the most unbelievable qualifying laps in the sport’s history. Narrated by Senna himself, the video tries to make us feel a little bit of what Ayrton felt that day when he was 1.427 seconds faster around Monaco than the second-fastest driver. That was a huge margin back in the day and is even more impressive by today’s standards.
Senna later said that his pole lap at Monaco in 1988 was the maximum he had ever achieved on a track. “That was the maximum for me; no room for anything more. I never reached that feeling again.” Scroll down to watch the video – we’ve also added another one with former McLaren team co-ordinator Jo Ramirez recalling that magical moment and an onboard video of the lap itself excerpted from the movie “Senna”.
