It seems that for some reason, in the last few years, the aura of perceived coolness that hovers around (posh) hatchbacks and shooting brakes has grown considerably, so much so that many of the most desirable current luxury cars are not sedans…
VW caught on to this early on, and through its two subsidiaries, Porsche and Audi, it launched the Panamera and A7, two models which proved extremely competent and commercially successful too. It seems however, that they’re now looking at adapting the same liftback formula for the smaller VW-badged CC, formerly the Passat CC.
According to MotorTrend, the Wolfsburg giant is already working on a replacement for the current CC, and it’s interpreted hints that the model might not be a sedan any more. Apparently, at this time two versions of the upcoming CC “are being studied,” which we assume means one is the traditional sedan, while the other is the hatch.
Realistically, it would be a wise move to make the CC even more unique to look at by making it a hatckback (an Audi A7 stands out more than the larger, more expensive A8, for instance), simply because the four-door coupe idea is no longer seen as niche and it’s being adapted and adopted by so many manufacturers. Just take a look at the new Mazda6 or Ford Fusion, two practical, mainstream sedans.
The model could arrive within the next 2-3 years, and there’s a distinct possibility of it being built in Mexico.
